Our most-booked ice cave tour: a 2.5–3 hour small-group trip into a natural blue ice cave inside Vatnajökull, with local glacier guides.
We start with a 4×4 super jeep ride to the glacier, where we hike to the ice cave (note that there is no elevation on the way to the cave). We spend a good amount of time in the ice cave exploring and taking all the photos you need.
The tour can take 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the day’s conditions and weather. All the ice caves are naturally made, so nature decides how they are shaped and where they are located. Safety is our priority, so we always choose the best Ice cave for every trip. The drive and the walk to the ice cave can, therefore, be different between days. If nature decides we cannot go to the ice cave, we have other extraordinary alternatives for you.
Best for: first-time visitors, families and travellers who want a shorter blue ice cave experience from Jökulsárlón.
The tour is 2.5–3 hours total. Roughly: about 30 minutes by Super Jeep onto the glacier, 25–35 minutes of walking on the ice with crampons, 35–45 minutes inside the cave, then the Super Jeep back. The cave time is the highlight, but the drive and walk are part of the experience and the day breaks down that way.
Our group is small (max 14). The cave isn’t always empty. Vatnajökull’s most accessible caves are shared by all the area’s operators in peak season, especially December through February. We pick our entry windows to give you good photography moments, but you’ll usually see other groups in the cave at some point. That’s the honest reality, and we’d rather tell you up front than have it surprise you on the day.
Cave colour varies, every season, every day. The blue ice you see in our photos is real, but it isn’t every cave on every day. Late-season caves often have more sediment and look silvery or grey. Early in the season they can be brilliant blue. Bright outside light through skylight holes intensifies the colour; flat overcast days mute it. We pick the best cave we can each morning. We can’t promise a specific shade.
What you’ll need: sturdy hiking boots with ankle support (this is essential, crampons don’t strap onto city shoes), warm wool/synthetic layers, waterproof outer shell, hat, gloves. We provide crampons, helmet, harness, and ice picks when needed. No food on tour, coffee and bathrooms at the Jökulsárlón café before departure.
Meeting and timing: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon main parking, 30 minutes before your tour start. Tours depart at 11:00 and 14:30. Late? Call +354 779 2919 first.
The glacier is a living environment. Cave locations, shapes and access can change with weather and ice movement. Our guides choose the safest accessible cave each morning and adjust or substitute the tour when needed.
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before your tour. If we have to cancel for unsafe weather or ice conditions, you get a full refund or a free reschedule — your choice.

The accessible commercial ice caves at Jökulsárlón are inside Vatnajökull National Park, Europe’s largest ice cap and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Other glaciers in Iceland have ice caves seasonally but Vatnajökull (specifically the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet) is the most established commercial ice cave area.
