Ice Cave Adventure Tour Description

The tour departs from the beautiful Jökulsárlón (Glacier Lagoon), from there we will drive towards the glacier on a super jeep, which usually takes about 30 minutes each way.

We will go through all the equipment that we need to use, and most of the time, we need to hike on the glacier part of the way. Therefore, it is important to have the proper gear. Glacier Trips provides all the safety gear like crampons, helmets, harnesses, and ice picks. We start by visiting a beautiful blue ice cave. We will have plenty of time to photograph and explore the ice cave and enjoy the magnificent shapes in the ice cave.

After we take our time with the cave, we will head on to explore the glacier a bit more, where we will take a hike in the beautiful glacier landscape with all the wild and unspoiled nature. We take our sweet time on the hike, giving everybody time to enjoy and capture the moment.

Best for: active travellers and photographers who want a longer ice cave experience with a guided glacier hike — smaller group (max 8), more time on the glacier.

What to expect on the day

The tour is 5–6 hours total. Roughly: longer Super Jeep transit onto the glacier, 1–1.5 hours of guided glacier hiking, extended cave exploration, and the return drive. This is a full half-day on the ice, slower paced than our short tour, but with more glacier and more time inside the cave when conditions are good.

Group is genuinely small: maximum 8. This is the biggest reason guests pick Adventures Dream over our short tour. Fewer people on the glacier, more time looking at any one ice feature, more conversation with the guide. The trade-off is the longer day and the higher fitness requirement.

How many caves we visit depends on the day. The standard tour visits one main cave plus glacier features (crevasses, moulins, blue ice on the surface). Some days conditions let us add a second smaller cave; other days only one is safe. We pick what’s accessible and safest each morning. If a specific number of caves matters to you, our 3-Day Photo Tour with Sindri covers significantly more ground.

Cave colour varies, every season, every day. The blue you see in photos is real, but isn’t every cave on every day. Late-season caves often have more sediment and look silvery or grey. Early in the season they can be brilliant blue. We can’t promise a specific shade, we pick the best cave we can each morning.

The Super Jeep drive onto the glacier is rough. Super Jeeps are heavily modified 4x4s built for glacier terrain, they tilt, rock, and crawl over surfaces a normal vehicle couldn’t. It can feel alarming if you’re not expecting it. Our drivers are experienced and the routes are scouted regularly. If anything ever feels unsafe, please tell the guide on the day.

Fitness: moderate to hard for some. You’ll be walking 1–1.5 hours on uneven ice with crampons, plus time in the cave. Minimum age 14. If you’re unsure whether this tour fits your fitness or any condition you have, email us at info@glaciertrips.is before booking. We’d rather give you a straight answer than have you discover a problem on the ice.

What you’ll need: sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, warm wool/synthetic layers, waterproof outer shell, hat, gloves. Bring water and a snack, the tour is long enough that you’ll want both. We provide crampons, helmet, harness, and ice picks.

Meeting and timing: Jökulsárlón parking, 30 minutes before 9:30 departure. Late? Call +354 779 2919.

Ice caves change every season — safety comes first every day.

The glacier is a living environment. Cave locations, shapes and access can change with weather and ice movement. Our guides choose the safest accessible cave each morning and adjust or substitute the tour when needed.

Should you book Adventures Dream, or the short tour?

Honest answer first: most ice-cave guests at Jökulsárlón are better served by the short tour. It’s 2.5–3 hours, half the price, covers the cave itself, and works for everyone in normal health. If “I want to see an Iceland ice cave” is the main goal, the short tour does that completely.

Adventures Dream is for a more specific kind of guest. Here’s how we tell them apart in emails before booking:

Pick Adventures Dream if you want:

  • A genuinely smaller group. We cap Adventures Dream at 8 people, vs 14 on the short tour. The whole day feels more intimate, more conversation with the guide, more time at any one feature, fewer queues.
  • Time on the glacier surface, not just inside a cave. The extra hours go into walking on the ice, crevasses, moulins, blue ice formations, the views toward the lagoon. The cave is one feature of the day, not the whole day.
  • Photography time. You can set up shots without feeling rushed. (For pure photography pacing, see the Ice Cave Photography Tour instead.)
  • A real glacier hike. 1–1.5 hours of walking on the ice with crampons, on more varied terrain than the short tour.

Skip Adventures Dream, book the short tour, if:

  • The cave itself is what you came for. You’ll see the same main cave on the short tour, just with less surface walking around it.
  • You have any doubt about fitness for 5–6 hours on the glacier. Be honest with yourself, Adventures Dream is rated moderate to hard.
  • You’re travelling with kids under 14. Adventures Dream has a 14+ age minimum (short tour is 8+).
  • You’re working with a tight schedule. The short tour is half a day; Adventures Dream is most of a day.
  • The price difference matters and the cave is what’s worth paying for.

What Adventures Dream is not:

We’re going to be clear because guests sometimes book Adventures Dream expecting more caves than the tour actually visits:

  • You will not necessarily see multiple caves. The day visits one main cave plus extensive glacier features. Some days conditions let us add a smaller second cave; many days only one is safe. We pick based on safety, not headcount.
  • The cave is the same cave the short tour visits (or one in the same area). Adventures Dream is longer time on the glacier, not access to “different” caves.
  • It is not an “expert” tour. It is more demanding than the short tour, but it is not climbing, ice-axe work, or anything technical. If you want technical glacier experience, our 3-Day Photo Tour with Sindri is the right fit.

If you’re still not sure

Email info@glaciertrips.is with what you’re trying to get out of the day and we’ll tell you which tour fits. We’d rather you book the right one than book Adventures Dream and regret the difference.

Is Adventures Dream harder than the regular ice cave tour?

Yes. The short tour is “accessible to anyone in good health”; Adventures Dream is “moderate to hard for some”. You’ll walk 1–1.5 hours on uneven ice with crampons, on varied terrain. Better for actively fit travellers.
