A Hidden Gem High on Breiðamerkurjökull

Every autumn, as Iceland cools and the first frost settles across Vatnajökull, a natural wonder begins to take shape. Tucked high on the eastern side of Breiðamerkurjökull, the ABC Ice Cave—also known as the Amazing Blue Cave—emerges as one of the most breathtaking glacier experiences you can have in October. While many caves near the glacier’s edge are still unstable this early in the season, this cave system deep within the ice already welcomes explorers with dazzling colour, unique formations, and a sense of solitude you rarely find on Iceland’s most popular tours.

Why October Is the Perfect Time for ABC Ice Cave

October marks the beginning of Iceland’s ice-caving season. Lower caves closer to the glacier’s edge remain too warm and too wet to explore safely, but by walking higher onto the glacier near Fjuskagil canyon and Mt. Fuski, visitors can already find stunning, stable formations. This river-fed area has long been known for producing ice tunnels and caves, carved by meltwater streams running into the glacier each summer. The result: beautifully sculpted passages of pure blue ice ready to explore long before most other caves become accessible.

Two Caves, Two Extraordinary Worlds

One of the unique features of the ABC Ice Cave experience is that it’s actually two different caves in one location:

  • The Tunnel Cave – A long, flowing corridor of deep cobalt blue ice, its walls polished to a glassy sheen. Smooth, wavy shapes—carved by warm glacier winds—line the tunnel, while a rare waterfall cascades through the ceiling, making this cave unlike any other in Iceland.
  • The Octopus Cave – Centred around a large moulin (vertical shaft), this cave branches into multiple shimmering tunnels. With the moulin as the “body” and the blue tunnels stretching outward like “arms,” it feels like stepping into a frozen octopus. Every passage reveals a new angle, reflection, or photographic opportunity—truly a glacier playground.

The Journey to the Ice Cave

Reaching the ABC Ice Cave is part of the adventure itself.

  • Meeting Point: Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón) parking lot.
  • Drive: ~30 minutes each way
  • Approach Hike: 15–20 minutes walk to the glacier.
  • Glacier Trek: 2.5–3 km each way on the glacier surface.
  • Book the tour: https://glaciertrips.is/ice-cave-adventures-dream/

This is a moderate to challenging hike, depending on the weather conditions. The terrain is not technical, but the distance—around 7–8 km round trip—requires good fitness and proper outdoor clothing. The reward for this effort is a level of solitude rarely found in Iceland’s more accessible caves.

Photography Heaven

For photographers, October in the ABC Ice Cave is a dream. The smooth, blue corridors, glowing light beams, icy textures, and striking contrasts, with layers of volcanic ash, create endless compositions. Because the cave is harder to reach, groups are smaller and the space less crowded—giving you time to set up shots and capture the magic without rush. With a bit of patience, it’s not uncommon to find yourself alone inside, surrounded only by flickering blue light.

What Visitors Say

For many travellers, exploring the ABC Ice Cave is the highlight of their trip to Iceland. Even guests who have visited other caves often say this one is the most impressive—especially in early season when few alternatives are open. Words like peaceful, adventurous, and otherworldly are repeated often.

Safety First, Always

Safety is central to the ABC Ice Cave experience. Glacier Trips keeps groups small (with a maximum of 8 guests per guide) and equips every participant with helmets, crampons, harnesses, and other necessary glacier gear. Only the most experienced guides lead these tours, ensuring stability checks, safe pacing, and expert interpretation of the glacier environment. Guests are asked to bring proper hiking boots, warm waterproof clothing, and a good level of fitness.

Why the ABC Ice Cave Stands Out

  • The high-glacier location makes it one of the first safe caves accessible in October.
  • Two distinct caves with unique features: a waterfall tunnel & moulin “octopus” cave
  • A longer hike means fewer crowds and more time for photos
  • Expert local guides with deep knowledge of Vatnajökull and the surrounding area
  • Small groups for a safer, more personal experience

Frequently asked questions

When can you visit the ABC ice cave?

ABC is one of the earliest-accessible caves of the season. We typically begin tours into it in late October once the autumn freeze has stabilised the cave structure. By December the main cave area is at its best. We continue running tours through to March or early April depending on conditions.

What makes the ABC ice cave different?

Two practical things: it tends to form earlier in the season than other Vatnajökull caves (October is genuinely viable, where many other caves are not stable until late November), and the cave system has multiple chambers in the same accessible area.

Is ABC the same as the Crystal Cave or Atlantis?

No. The three are distinct cave systems in different parts of the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet of Vatnajökull. ABC tends to be visited earlier in the season, Atlantis is on the west side with a more open skylight character, and “Crystal Cave” is a marketing term that different operators apply to whichever cave is currently the bluest on a given week.

How do I book a tour to ABC ice cave?

The short Ice Cave Inside Vatnajökull tour (2.5–3 hours, from 23,900 ISK) visits ABC when conditions favour it. The longer Adventures Dream tour (5–6 hours) may also visit ABC depending on the day’s safety assessment. Email info@glaciertrips.is to confirm which caves are currently being visited.

How long does the ABC cave visit last?

About 35–45 minutes inside the cave on the short tour, longer on the Adventures Dream tour. The total tour is 2.5–3 hours including the Super Jeep ride from Jökulsárlón parking onto the glacier and back.

Are tripods allowed in ABC ice cave?

Yes, on the Photography Tour and the 3-Day Photo Tour where the smaller group and slower pacing make tripod work practical. On the short tour tripods are technically allowed but the group pacing limits the practical use.

What is the minimum age for the ABC ice cave tour?

8 years old on the short tour, 14+ on the longer Adventures Dream tour. We can advise on whether either tour fits a particular child’s situation if you email us before booking.

Will I see other groups in the ABC cave?

In peak season (December–February), yes, sometimes. Vatnajökull’s accessible cave system is shared by all area operators. We time our entry windows to give you cleaner photography moments, but we cannot book the cave exclusively. October and April are quieter if solitude matters.
